My Personal Journey

I am glad to share my personal journey as a ‘Learner and Educator’ and how it began in the middle of accomplished professional working life in the corporate sector. Although it sounds interesting, however it takes tremendous courage and effort on mental shift to be the part of revolutionary change of something in the field of education. Well, it’s not an easy deal of leaving behind or to unlearn of certain things of your ongoing career which equally shares your passion and persuading one of the life objectives, which is totally into different field.  However, the quality of being a risk taker, sometime propels you to make your life more meaningful. The thought of following life objective captivated my mind to take a plunge in the world of children education. Thus, here it began my mission to be a “Lifelong learner”, because one can learn a lot from children. In fact, children are the best teachers for any aspiring teacher.

Considering the current scenario in educational system prevails in India & having gone through myself under same chaotic academic pattern, I always used to feel the urge “that something sought to be changed in educational system.” at least for the next coming generations. My question was, how can I or one can do it? But naturally I personally can do nothing all alone even if I want. Then I struck with my own epiphany, “Yes, professionally I certainly can contribute to be the change”

I came across IAAT (I Am A Teacher – an organization) PGDLT (Post Graduate Learning and Teaching) program & learnt that there is a platform I can step in, to achieve my life objective to launch myself in transforming phase of educational system.

Now, what is IAAT and what exactly is PGDLT?

‘I Am A Teacher’ (IAAT), a not for profit organization, is committed to building a model of excellence for teacher education in India. Founded by the alumni of Harvard University and Founders of HXLS in collaboration with Boston Teacher Residency (BTR), USA; IAAT aims to build a critical mass of educators who are mindful, passionate and can lead change in and through classrooms.

PGDLT is an innovative, practice-based, one-year, full-time program in collaboration with the American School of Bombay. It blends together intensive coursework and practice teaching that is done under the guidance of senior experienced teachers at American School of Bombay and expert IAAT faculty. Each Student and Teacher spends a whole year in one classroom receiving gradual assumption of teaching responsibility in an experiential learning environment.

Below is the subject knowledge gained in IAAT - PGDLT program: -

My Learning and Teaching Mission

One of the best things I learnt in the field of experiential education training is ‘Grow with mentor’. The mentoring system lies at the heart of teacher’s training program. Working closely with mentoring teachers during training program is highly significant part of my preparation as a teacher. School based mentoring system provides a real context for the new teachers to learn and gain the first-hand experience of working with children and apply the theoretical concepts and principles learnt in the due teaching course.

It’s a wonderful experience having thoroughly mentored by professional team of educators in IAAT and it’s been an amazing collaboration with accomplished classroom teacher from U.K, Mr. Chris Baker of American School of Bombay underpinning experiential teaching techniques such as: -

  • how to nurture student’s mind,

  • how to develop student’s skill’s set,

  • what is responsive classroom,

  • how to provoke student’s ability of critical thinking by providing them hands-on experiences,

  • how to create a healthy and cheerful dialogue between teacher and students,

  • how to maintain lively classroom environment which allows freedom to students as well as being respectful to all the surrounding resources,

  • How the classroom arrangement should be done which cater to every student in efficient learning etc.

Overall every mentor served as a role model, teaches, encourages, counsels through reflections, befriended throughout. Thus, the beauty of professional growth lies in the community ethics being followed in collaboration.

How mentoring and collaboration helped me to develop excellent teaching skills?

Professional experience is where you can begin to experiment and implement many of the ideas and theories that you have learnt about during your teacher education studies. The best of working in collaboration with Mr. Chris Baker in American School of Bombay is co-teaching with him.

Co-teaching with your collaborating teacher, conferencing with mentors is another enriching experience where you get trained directly under the real professional and live classroom environment. Also, it gives you an opportunity to experiment with new teaching practices and resources under guidance of accomplished mentor.

In the whole process of mentoring, collaboration and co-teaching requires observation, reflective practice, collaborative planning and action coupled with episodes of discussion, various teaching strategies, modelling etc. It provides a great deal about quality learning and teaching and much wider scope of discovering more about teaching skills as what I am comfortable with and do well, which areas of pedagogy I need to improve. This type of mentoring training helped my professional experience underpinned with the theoretical and practical knowledge to achieve your best, both personally and professionally. Eventually, the process of mentoring and collaborating made me a resilient learner as well as teacher along the way.

Experiential Education
IMG_20181003_084730.jpg

You may want to know what is ‘Experiential Learning Environment’?

Experiential education is an educational strategy that connects classroom theory with practice in the real world. It is the process of actively engaging students in an experience that will have real consequences to develop skills in leadership and management. Experiential methodology in education is proven as most powerful tool of educating today’s generation.

It is any form of teaching that utilizes direct "hands-on" experience. Skills, knowledge, and experience are acquired by the students outside of the traditional academic classroom setting, and may include internships, studies abroad, field trips, field research, and service-learning projects. Overall it means that the students are placed at the center.

What is the role of teacher in experiential education methodology?

Experiential teachers are not just conventional school teachers but they are more of facilitator to each and every student.  The teacher's role is to develop methods for engaging the students in experiences that provide them with access to knowledge and practice in particular skills and dispositions. The role of the student is transformed in relation to the role of the teacher.

My experience as a learner influencing my thinking about teaching

Well, having my mother as a higher secondary school teacher, a grandmother, 6 aunts, 3 cousins spent their working life in the field of education, my penchant for the same is I feel inherited naturally despite of owning a career in non-educational field.

Thus it’s a slogan began with my mother that “To teach / educate the student, first you have to be the student all your life..”. Also, children are the best source of learning for any teacher. Education does not only involve an academic, bookish orientation but also an overall your way of being, way of thinking, approach, code of conduct, creativity and enhancements for better or human welfare.

Experiential Education

My Philosophy of Education

Every individual has his attributes towards life, personal beliefs and philosophies which directly shapes his/her’s mind and it’s reflected in how that individual lives, thinks, behaves with others, interacts with environment etc.. Likewise, it leaves great impact on his learning and teaching processes as well. Thus any person from the teaching profession who wants to become an effective teacher must understand his own beliefs, his own educational philosophies. This is because, core elements of educational philosophies of teachers highly and directly affect the learning process of their students, learning standards, curriculum, contents of study material, learning environment (majorly classroom experience of students).

Being a teacher is that feeling which borne inside the heart that firmly believes “the beginning of every child's empowerment start with his/her "Right To Education”. Hence I strongly believe that being a teacher I must identify what are my personal educational philosophy or perspective ? in order to understand my own value system which will be consciously - subconsciously will be brought into the classroom teaching. Understanding what is my perspective of education ? purpose of educating students ? what will be taught to student ? what is the role of me being a teacher in the school ?  how it will be taught ? what is the role of students in the classroom ? To be mindful of thought that education is all about shaping the children / students mind for future.

Referring back to the teacher’s knowledge of educational philosophies comprise of 3 main types -

1) teacher-centered philosophies 2) student-centered philosophies, and 3) society-centered philosophies.  However,   out of these, Essentialism and Perennialism are considered as two types of teacher-centered philosophies of education. According to published information, Essentialism is currently the leading style of public education in the United States. It is the teaching of basic skills that have been proven over time to be needed in society. Perennialism focuses on the teaching of great works.

There are three types of student-centered philosophies of education. Progressivism focuses on developing the student’s moral compass. Humanism is about fostering each student to his or her fullest potential. Constructivism focuses on using education to shape a student’s world view.

Then, there are two types of socially-centered philosophies of education. Reconstructionism is the perspective that education is the means to solve social problems. Behaviorism focuses on cultivating behaviors that are beneficial to society.

According to John Dewey born in 1859 in Burlington, Vermont was one of the most influential educational philosophers was a pragmatist, progressivist, educator, philosopher, and social reformer. He believed that traditional classroom settings were not appropriate from viewpoint of development of young learners and schools should be representative of a social environment and that students learn best when in natural social settings. He mentioned about two different types of education, traditional and progressive. Dewey referred that traditional type of education as a strategy meant to take information obtained in the past and reiterating it to students in an organized fashion, mainly in the form of tests, presentations, homework, and grades based on these assignments. Where as, he describes progressive education as using experiences more for education rather than just material, catering towards, or at least how progressive educators believe it, children. However, a teacher with pragmatist philosophers will focus on building constructed, participative knowledge with students. They will rely on dialogue and critical examination and will be more comfortable with ambiguous situation.

I learnt that Progressive bases it’s theory on experiential education, meaning that children learn by performing certain tasks individually or in the teamwork or events and learn majority on their own. That brings out their learning potential at optimum level. However, a teacher should be able to understand that not all experiences are educational, and we have to be mindful to be able to probe the difference between good and bad experience, and also between educational and non-educational.

One of the best example, that supports Dewey’s educational philosophy and widely followed is ‘’Morning Meeting” conducted everyday in the classroom, (at least in the elementary school). Morning Meeting is a first session or beginning of the classroom used in the Responsive Classroom which promotes the ideas of social-emotional learning and building a community of learners at similar level. Morning Meeting is a purposeful session that sets the tone for an entire day in the classroom for establishing environment and respectful learning. By creating a community that builds trust in the classroom, students will feel comfortable with friendly classroom interaction. The Morning Meeting allows students to have a sense of belonging, feel significant, and have fun, all of which are essential components to a successful classroom. Hence, such type of constructive and progressive classroom environment promotes the positive social-emotional setting. Eventually, this bring out the holistic approach into education and results in enhanced academic learning or achievement.

Finally, along with having own educational philosophy of progressive / pragmatic / experiential education, a teacher should understand the what is the  ultimate aim of education ? I personally think that the purpose of educating children should be to grow and develop them into productive citizens that use their knowledge, talents, and learned skills to sustain themselves and help others while pushing the human race forward in areas of equality, equity, and harmony.

And what is the purpose of giving education ?? I would rather abide by the fact that, the main purpose of education is to open up the mind of students and prepare them to face the world with practical and mindful approach. However, in today’s scenario, unfortunately students think that education is merely getting a degree from a reputed university and landing on a high paying job. That's what is happening since many decades amongst generations since the time when I was a student.
